THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS. THIS IS A QUICK WALK THROUGH TO ESTABLISH THE FACTS AS WE ALL KNOW THEM TO BE THE UNPALATABLE TRUTH.
We the tax payers pay all their salaries. We give them permission to govern us as they see fit for a limited period and then if we don't like what they are doing we can vote them out by the use of the ballot. SO Far SO GOOD! MAJORITY RULES! We originally had three parties, now we have the choice between 2. Democrat and Republican.
Every 4 years we can reelect a sitting President, 6 for a Senator or choose a new candidate and the same holds true every 2 years for Congressional candidates.
Each party puts up their field of candidates and we tend to vote for the statis quo (present Office Holder). The exception is the President who carries the can. If the economy is bad, he or she will be voted out in favor of a new candidate who promises change (even though we are all aware that only Congress can effect domestic change (laws). The President has the Bully Pulpit to influence change but rarely is it used with the exception of leading us and Congress into foreign adventures. We are the voters and who ever gets the most of our votes gets to govern the rest of us till the next ballot. BEWARE OF PRESIDENTIAL POWER IT IS AWESOME!!
The downside is that for elected Publc servants to keep their jobS they have to get re-elected. In most instances the candidate who has the most money to campaign with wins. So fund raisers for them are the the name of the game, their campaigns run on up to the moment the candidate is re-elected or elected and continues through to the next ballot. Then the process repeats itself year in year out, till the Office Holder is voted out, resigns or dies (with the exception of the President). It's just the way the system has evolved. We can only blame ourselves for allowing this farce to continue. Our Office Holders guard and are beholden to a system that practically guarantees them the unfair opportunity to remain in office while accumulating a war chest that they can then legally use to squelch any and all new candidates from taking their job (change). HARDLY THE AMERICAN WAY!
The rub is that once we let money into politics it has to become the corrupting influence that can tempt our Office Holders to enter into quid pro quo deals with each other as well as outsiders ( If you support my bill, I'll support yours or promise me a substantial campaign fund contribution and I might be able to do you a favor). The favor will be to outside interests either foreign or domestic. A large entity (foreign governments, corporations or unions) doesn't pony up largess or votes for free. They are all looking to benefit. Through their lobbyists they are obviously willing to offer a large campaign contribution to get a variance or exception from the effects of a current law or one that is about to become law.
Should we allow the possibility that our elected Public Officials can be bought. The answer is a resounding NO!
Only if there are enough Proamericans can this pernicious system be bought under control. The total cost the coming Federal Eelections will exceed $5.3 billion dollars (money sucked out of the economy) The Brits do it for $75 million.
